Description
Marie-Louise BAR (1892-1986) - Manufacture HB Quimper Two seagulls Black earthenware group Signed under the base HB Quimper Bar Height 16 cm, - Width : 28 cm, Depth : 14,5 cm Firing defects on the front of the base A sculptor, she exhibited regularly from 1921 onwards at the Salons de la Nationale, d'Automne and des Tuileries. She was awarded the Prix Lecreuse in 1929, establishing her reputation in the Parisian art world. She worked with the HB manufacture in Quimper, for whom she created several animal models that have become emblematic, including the "Mouettes" (seagulls), a "Porcupine" (porcupine) produced in a pre-war limited edition of 200, as well as a "Fennec" and a "Pie blanche craquelée becquetant" (cracked white magpie). The two seagulls in black stoneware are part of this animal series, in which the artist explores the attitudes of the avian world with sensitivity. Through her refined stylisation and keen observation of movement, she manages to combine realism and decoration, giving these pieces a presence that is both sober and expressive.
