Description
Louis GARIN (1888-1959) - Manufacture HB Quimper
Round polychrome earthenware plate decorated with a couple of Bigoudens dancing in front of the sea
Signed HB Quimper Louis Garin
Diameter: 23.5 cm
A Breton painter and illustrator, Louis Garin trained at the École des Beaux-Arts in Rennes and then in Paris. Committed to depicting popular Brittany, he developed a body of work marked by observation of scenes of daily life and regional traditions.
He worked with the HB-Henriot factory in Quimper between the wars, bringing to ceramic production a language directly derived from his work as a narrative painter. His polychrome earthenware models are characterised by highly legible scenes, expressive designs and a strong ethnographic dimension.
