Provenance: Given to the current owner by the buyer of a château belonging to the General Weygand family.
The construction of the Superbe was part of a programme decided by Louis XVI to diversify the types of ships in service in the Royal Navy. Its construction was supervised by Jacques-Noël Sané. Launched in 1785, the ship was part of Admiral Villaret de Joyeuse's fleet. It took part in the Great Winter cruise, but was seriously damaged and suffered water ingress during a storm in January 1795, so Admiral de Joyeuse decided to abandon the vessel.
