Virgin and Child, Spanish School, 19th–20th centuries
Oil on canvas. A depiction of the Virgin Mary holding the Christ Child, both united by an expression of affection and contemplation. The Child carries a bunch of grapes, a Eucharistic symbol associated with sacrifice and redemption, whilst the Virgin protects him with a wide blue mantle that gives structure to the composition. The faces, with their large eyes and delicate chromatic nuances, are reminiscent of popular Renaissance and Baroque-inspired models prevalent between the 19th and 20th centuries.
