Oil on canvas. Dimensions 93 x 51 cm; frame 106 x 64 cm. Preparatory sketch for the altar of Saint Benedict intended for the Piarist Fathers’ church in Sabadell, dated 1950 and signed by the artist. The composition depicts the Benedictine saint standing beneath a pointed arch, holding a book of monastic rules whilst making a gesture of blessing. At his feet, two young monks kneel in veneration, reinforcing the pedagogical and spiritual nature of the scene. Above them descends the dove of the Holy Spirit, radiating divine light, an element that defines the vertical axis of the composition and emphasises the message of heavenly inspiration. The work is notable for its monumental conception, typical of an altarpiece design, featuring figures with clearly defined outlines, a restrained colour palette, and a hierarchical arrangement that encourages devotional interpretation. The artistic language reflects Catalan religious painting of the mid-20th century, in which the iconographic tradition is adapted to formal solutions of great narrative clarity, intended for worship and spiritual instruction.
