Lamentation over the Dead Christ. Spanish School. Late 18th – early 19th century Oil on canvas. Dimensions 89 x 67 cm. A devotional scene centred on the recumbent body of Christ following the Descent from the Cross, accompanied by the Virgin Mary and the holy women in an atmosphere of profound spiritual contemplation. The composition is organised diagonally, drawing the eye from the lifeless body of Jesus to the grieving figures surrounding him, whilst several cherubs join in the sacred lament. The architectural landscape in the background, featuring buildings and references to Calvary, enhances the narrative dimension of the scene. The striking colour contrasts between the intense reds and blues of the robes and the soft flesh tones reinforce the expressiveness of the gestures and gazes. The brushwork reveals a popular style in the late Baroque tradition, with devotional echoes characteristic of late 18th-century Hispanic religious painting.
