Description
MICHELE CORTEGIANI (Palermo, 1857 – Palermo, 1919) - Little Fishermen amongst the Rocks Oil on canvas. Dimensions: 80 x 140 cm. Michele Cortegiani was one of the most prominent landscape and genre painters of the late 19th-century Sicilian school, renowned especially for his coastal views, seascapes, and depictions of everyday life in the Mediterranean. Trained in Palermo and deeply rooted in the Italian Verismo tradition, he developed a style characterised by direct observation of nature, a luminous colour palette, and a particular sensitivity to Sicily’s coastal environments. This work depicts three young fishermen on a rocky outcrop by the sea, in a scene of great narrative simplicity that naturally captures an everyday moment of seafaring life. The composition is structured around a wide opening towards the sea horizon, where the intense blue of the Mediterranean contrasts with the light tones of the rocks bathed in sunlight. In the distance, a small fishing boat can be seen, reinforcing the local and traditional character of the scene. Cortegiani demonstrates here his extraordinary ability to depict atmospheric effects, the transparency of the water, and the luminous vibrancy of the Sicilian coast—aspects that are hallmarks of his work. The arrangement of the figures, dwarfed by the vastness of the landscape, emphasises the harmonious relationship between humankind and the natural environment, whilst the loose, luminous brushstrokes help to convey the sense of the open air characteristic of late 19th-century Italian painting. The work brings together the artist’s most prized qualities: a sensitivity to landscapes, an eye for everyday life, and a remarkable ability to capture the light and atmosphere of the Mediterranean. Its subject matter ties in with some of the painter’s best-known compositions depicting fishermen, seascapes and coastal scenes of Sicily, which were highly popular with collectors of his time.
