Description
20TH CENTURY SPANISH SCHOOL - Study of an Old Man’s Head
Oil on canvas. Dimensions: 45 x 37 cm. This work is a study of an old man’s head, executed with quick, spontaneous brushstrokes of great expressive power. The artist focuses all attention on the model’s face, capturing with remarkable sensitivity the effects of light on the skin tones, as well as the texture of the long white beard and the features marked by age. The loose and vibrant brushstrokes, applied with great freedom, give the work the character of a life drawing typical of the Spanish painting tradition of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. An illegible signature appears in the lower right-hand corner next to the date ‘1903’. The identification plate on the frame bears the inscription ‘J. Sorolla’, a particularly interesting detail given the stylistic similarity between this work and some studies and sketches produced by Joaquín Sorolla during those years. The freedom of execution, the focus on light effects and the direct treatment of the model share numerous stylistic features with the work of the Valencian master; however, in the absence of conclusive documentation, the painting should prudently be classified within the scope of the Spanish school of the early 20th century.
