19TH-CENTURY DUTCH SCHOOL, IN THE STYLE OF FRANS VAN MIERIS THE ELDER (Leiden, 1635 – Leiden, 1681) – The painter’s studio
Oil on two oak panels, unframed. Dimensions: 50 x 38 cm. Dimensions with frame: 67 x 63.5 cm. This work is a 19th-century interpretation of a composition by Frans van Mieris the Elder, one of the most refined representatives of the Leiden School during the Dutch Golden Age. The painting reproduces a model known as The Painter’s Studio, based on a now-lost work by the Dutch master that was formerly held in the Gemäldegalerie in Dresden. As in many of Van Mieris’s compositions, the scene unfolds in a meticulously rendered interior, where the artist pays particular attention to the details of objects, textures and lighting effects—elements that made his work famous and were widely admired and copied in subsequent centuries. Frans van Mieris was renowned for the extraordinary delicacy of his brushwork and the meticulous detail with which he depicted genre scenes set in elegant domestic interiors. His works enjoyed great prestige amongst European collectors, particularly for the quality of their execution and their ability to combine naturalism, technical virtuosity and narrative refinement. During the 19th century, coinciding with a renewed interest in the 17th-century Dutch masters, numerous compositions by Van Mieris were copied and reinterpreted by artists and collectors drawn to the elegance and technical perfection of his models. This painting retains the intimate and sophisticated character typical of the Leiden tradition, distinguished by the careful execution of details and its fidelity to the spirit of the original composition.
