Description
19TH-CENTURY FLEMISH SCHOOL, AFTER DOMINICUS VAN TOL (Bodegraven, 1635 – Leiden, 1676) – Genre scene Oil on paper adhered to cardboard and mounted on panel. Dimensions: 28 x 24 cm. Dimensions with frame: 45 x 41 cm. This work is a 19th-century interpretation inspired by the work of Dominicus van Tol, a Dutch painter belonging to the Leiden artistic circle and nephew of the renowned Gerrit Dou. Specialising in small-format genre scenes, Van Tol was known for his depictions of domestic interiors, elegant figures and everyday scenes executed with extraordinary detail, following the refined tradition of the so-called fijnschilders, or ‘fine painters’. The composition reflects the taste for intimate and carefully constructed scenes that characterised 17th-century Dutch painting. The artist pays particular attention to the details of clothing, objects and the setting, recreating a serene and elegant atmosphere typical of the Leiden tradition. The delicate lighting and descriptive precision reinforce the narrative character of the scene, evoking the technical refinement that made the works of Dominicus van Tol and the masters of his circle famous. During the 19th century, coinciding with a renewed interest in Dutch Golden Age painting, numerous works inspired by artists such as Van Tol were created to meet the demand of collectors drawn to the technical quality and charm of Dutch genre scenes. This work belongs to this historicist trend, preserving the spirit and elegance of the original models. Executed on paper mounted onto card and subsequently mounted onto a panel, the painting is an attractive example of the enduring taste for 17th-century Dutch painting amongst 19th-century European collectors. Lot held in an international warehouse (within the EU). Intra-EU shipping: no import duties apply within the EU. An export licence from the country of origin may be required.
