Description
19TH-CENTURY DUTCH SCHOOL, IN THE STYLE OF BERNARDUS VAN SCHENDEL (1647–1709) – Still life of flowers
Oil on panel. This work belongs to the tradition of floral still lifes inspired by the work of Bernardus Van Schendel, an artist of the Dutch school whose work is characterised by the meticulous representation of floral arrangements and the careful observation of different botanical species. The composition features an elegant grouping of flowers arranged with decorative flair and chromatic balance, in a style that enjoyed great popularity amongst European collectors from the 17th century onwards. The artist pays particular attention to the depiction of petals, leaves and stems, as well as the effects of light on the various surfaces, demonstrating a profound knowledge of the Dutch still-life tradition. During the 19th century, compositions inspired by the masters of the Dutch Golden Age experienced a significant revival, resulting in numerous works that recaptured the technical refinement, chromatic richness and symbolic value characteristic of this genre. This painting follows in this tradition, evoking the taste for highly virtuosic and decoratively appealing floral representations that made the Dutch school famous. Lot held in an international warehouse (within the EU). Intra-EU shipment: no import duties apply within the EU. An export licence from the country of origin may be required.
