Description
DUTCH SCHOOL, ATTRIBUTED TO BERNARDUS VAN SCHENDEL (1647–1709) - Tavern scene
Oil on panel. Dimensions: 19 x 24 cm. Dimensions including frame: 36 x 41 cm. This work is a reproduction inspired by Dutch genre scenes that were highly popular amongst European collectors. The composition depicts a lively tavern interior with various figures engaged in everyday activities such as conversation, drinking and leisure, recreating the warm and familiar atmosphere typical of inns in Northern Europe. The artist pays particular attention to the characterisation of the figures and the small narrative details that enrich the scene, following a pictorial tradition that has been widely practised since the 17th century. The lighting focused on the figures, the use of a palette dominated by earth tones, and the interior setting evoke the styles developed by numerous Dutch masters specialising in popular and genre scenes. Executed in the style of Old Dutch painting, this work reflects the enduring interest in anecdotal compositions, which continued to be appreciated and reproduced in subsequent centuries for their decorative appeal and ability to convey episodes from everyday life. Lot held in an international warehouse (within the EU). Intra-EU shipping: no import duties apply within the EU. Export permission from the country of origin may be required.
