JOSÉ FRANCO CORDERO (Jerez de la Frontera, Cádiz, 1851 – Madrid, 1910) – Riverside landscape of Alcalá. Late 19th-century Spanish school Oil on canvas. Dimensions: 59.5 x 100 cm. Signed in the lower left corner: “F. Cordero”. This work depicts a peaceful riverside view near Alcalá, rendered with a sensitivity to landscape characteristic of late 19th-century Spanish painting. The composition is structured around a vast natural space traversed by the watercourse, where vegetation and atmospheric effects take centre stage. José Franco Cordero was particularly renowned for his Andalusian and Castilian landscapes, developing a style of painting characterised by marked naturalism in which direct observation of nature is combined with a remarkable sensitivity to light.
