Description
"Masks", Toni Rovira, 20th-century Catalan contemporary school
Oil on canvas: 100 x 80 cm. Toni Rovira was born in Tiana (Barcelona). A painter with a long national and international career, he is supported by Lola Anglada, a renowned Catalan painter. His work has gone through various phases. A landscape phase, characterised by the poetry of the elements; a ‘costimbrista’ phase, depicting everyday life with the support of Terenci Moix and Francisco Candel; and a humanist and socially engaged phase, during which he was described as a ‘philosopher’ by Manuel Vázquez Montalbán, and ‘apocalyptic’ and ‘prophetic’ by Baltasar Porcel, as a ‘portraitist of the human spirit’ by José María Gironella, and as a ‘thinker’ by Cristóbal Zaragoza. Thus, driven by a desire to convey his feelings to as many people as possible, he decided to bring his experience to the media, contributing to the magazine *Hogares* by writing poetic portraits of famous figures, and currently contributing to the magazine *Primera Línea* by interviewing well-known personalities. The countless national and international guests who have appeared on his programmes attest to the success of his television projects, which have enjoyed a huge popular response (Toni Rovira y tu, etc.). Provenance: former private collection of a collector and renowned Barcelona doctor, Barcelona. Settlement of a family inheritance; lot sold without reserve.
