Ilia Repin (1844–1930) – Russian contemporary avant-garde school of the 1940s, signed and dated 1940 Oil on cardboard, 52 x 41.5 cm. Signed and dated 1940 in the lower right-hand corner. Ilya Yefimovich Repin, Chukhuyiv, Kharkiv Governorate, Russian Empire, 24 July/5 August 1844 (Gregorian calendar) – Kuokkala, Finland (now Répino in the Kurortny district of Saint Petersburg, 29 September 1930) was a prominent Russian painter and sculptor of Ukrainian origin associated with the Itinerant art movement. In the late 1920s, detailed studies of his work began to be published in the USSR, and around ten years later he was held up as a model to be emulated by Socialist Realist artists.
