Description
Saint Justa, Spanish school of Gutiérrez de la Vega, 19th century
Oil on canvas. Dimensions 77 x 59 / 90 x 74 cm. A half-length female figure identifiable as Saint Justa by the palm of martyrdom and the architecture in the background, probably an allusion to the Giralda in Seville. The saint appears enveloped in a flowing, ochre-coloured cloak over dark clothing with pink sleeves; her face is softly modelled and turned upwards, creating a serene and devotional expression. The composition draws attention to the elegance of the figure, the refinement of the hands, and the contrast between the pearly flesh tones, the luminous drapery, and the ethereal background. The execution reveals an academic interpretation of a religious subject, featuring an idealisation of the female form, gentle qualities in the lighting, and a devotional sensibility rooted in the Baroque style, which was later reworked.
