Souk scene. Signed M. Bertuchi. Orientalist School. 20th century. Watercolour on paper. The work depicts a street scene in a North African souk or market, captured from a costumbrista perspective. Several robed figures walk beneath a pergola that filters the light, casting geometric shadows on the pavement. In the foreground, a group of figures can be seen next to a whitewashed wall with an arch, one of them wearing a red headdress. The architecture and light evoke an atmosphere typical of the Maghreb region. The watercolour technique is executed with great freshness, using transparencies and the play of light and shadow to convey the vividness of the moment. Signed in the lower right-hand corner: ‘M.
