Guardian Angel. Spanish School. Late 19th – early 20th century. Oil on canvas. Dimensions: 50 x 67 cm. The work depicts a standing angel, dressed in a blue tunic with outstretched wings, guiding a barefoot child beneath a stormy, greenish sky. A diagonal beam of light bursts from above, illuminating the heavenly protector and lending drama to the whole scene. The execution, characterised by looser brushwork and expressive colours, suggests a later style, in which academic influences coexist with Romantic sensibility.
