Description
VIRGIN OF VALVANERA - Mexican Colonial School, 17th century
Oil on canvas. Dimensions 65 x 47 cm. A devotional scene centred on a crowned image of the Virgin and Child, set on a pedestal within an elaborate trompe-l’œil altarpiece. The painted architecture incorporates Solomonic columns, gathered drapery, ornamental shields and cherubs that frame the composition, creating a theatrical effect characteristic of religious Baroque art. In the foreground, a kneeling worshipper directs his gaze and prayer towards the sacred image, emphasising the votive nature of the work. The composition combines a clearly defined visual hierarchy with rich symbolic ornamentation intended to reinforce Marian devotion. The execution features simple yet effective linework, with a predominance of warm tones and moderate light contrasts. These characteristics recall the 17th-century Hispanic American pictorial tradition, in which religious imagery played a primary catechetical and spiritual role. The work constitutes an interesting testament to the spread of Marian devotion in the colonial world. Dimensions: 65 x 47 cm.
