Description
Our Lady of Mount Carmel with Donors, Colonial School of New Granada, 18th century Oil on canvas. Dimensions 62 x 45 cm. The Virgin of Mount Carmel is depicted enthroned on clouds, holding the Infant Jesus and offering the scapular as a symbol of spiritual protection. On either side are two figures in prayer, possibly Carmelite saints or donors associated with the order’s devotion. Below the figure of the Virgin are cherub heads that reinforce the celestial nature of the scene. The composition adopts an ascending structure that draws the viewer’s gaze towards the glorious apparition of the Virgin. The work stands out for its narrative simplicity, the symbolic use of religious attributes, and the devotional efficacy of the image. The formal language and iconography follow models widely disseminated in colonial Baroque painting during the 18th century, intended to foster Marian veneration and popular spirituality. Dimensions: 62 x 45 cm.
