Description
GIAMPETRINO CIRCLE (Giovanni Pietro Rizzoli, Milan, c. 1485 – c. 1553) – Virgin and Child. 16th-century Italian School
Oil on panel. Dimensions: 82.5 x 61 cm. This work depicts the Virgin Mary holding the Christ Child in a composition of profound intimacy and delicacy, fully in keeping with the Leonardesque tradition developed in Lombardy during the first decades of the 16th century. The painting exhibits numerous characteristics associated with the circle of Giampietrino, one of Leonardo da Vinci’s most prominent followers in Milan; these are particularly evident in the softness of the faces, the serenity of the expressions, the sfumato modelling of the flesh tones, and the pursuit of an idealised beauty inherited directly from Leonardesque models. The Virgin is depicted with elegant monumentality, whilst the Child establishes a close and affectionate bond with his mother—an aspect that constitutes one of the principal contributions of Lombard Renaissance painting. The delicate rendering of the folds, the rich colours, and the enveloping atmosphere of the composition find parallels in numerous works produced within Giampietrino’s artistic circle, whose output played a decisive role in disseminating Leonardo’s style throughout northern Italy. The quality of execution and the refined compositional sensibility place the work within the sphere of the 16th-century Milanese school, at a time when Leonardo’s legacy had reached full maturity. On the reverse, it bears a label from the Barrachina and Ramoneda conservation workshop, as well as the painted inscription ‘4232’, evidence of its history in a private collection and previous conservation work. It comes from an important private collection.
