Description
The Boy with the Thorn, Colonial School, first half of the 18th century
Oil on canvas. Dimensions: 47 x 33 cm. The Christ Child is depicted seated in a richly ornamented armchair, intently removing a thorn whilst holding in his hands the symbol that foreshadows the Passion. The luxurious fabric, decorated with gold motifs, and the deep darkness of the background enhance the meditative nature of the scene. The delicate modelling, the meticulous decoration and the refined use of colour are characteristic of 18th-century New Spanish painting, in which childlike tenderness is combined with a profound symbolic and devotional significance. Dimensions: 47 x 33 cm.
