Description
Crucifixion, Circle of Blas de Prado, Castilian School, 16th century Oil on panel. Dimensions: 55 x 33 cm. Christ on the cross occupies the central axis of the composition on a distinctly vertical cross, silhouetted against a twilight landscape of sombre and silent tones. The body is rendered with remarkable expressive restraint, emphasising the redemptive sacrifice through an austere and profoundly devotional depiction. At the foot of the cross lies the skull of Adam, a symbol of the redemption of humanity, whilst the distant horizon lends depth and a sense of contemplation to the scene. The execution reveals the influence of Spanish Mannerist painting, with particular attention to drawing, stylised anatomy and compositional balance. The spiritual intensity of the image and its refined simplicity make the work an outstanding example of Castilian religious painting from the late 16th century. Dimensions: 55 x 33 cm.
