Saint Joseph holds the Christ Child in a half-length composition that emphasises the affectionate closeness between the two sacred figures. The saint is identified by the flowering staff adorned with lilies, a symbol of purity and divine election, whilst the Child gazes upwards in an attitude of serene contemplation.
