Description
Saint Praxedes. Attributed to Luca Cambiaso (Moneglia, 1527 – El Escorial, 1585) Oil on canvas. Dimensions 157 x 117 cm. The saint is depicted seated in a contemplative pose, collecting the blood of martyrs with a sponge into a copper vessel, an iconographic attribute that identifies her as Saint Praxedes. The delicate lowering of her gaze, the elegance of her hands, and the serenity of her features convey a profound sense of piety and inner meditation. The rich drapery and the carefully modulated light evoke the Italian devotional tradition of the 17th century, which developed within the context of Counter-Reformation spirituality.
