Description
Saint Joseph with the Child. Attributed to Paolo de Matteis. Neapolitan School. 17th century Oil on canvas. Dimensions 178 x 122 cm; framed 190 x 135 cm. The composition depicts Saint Joseph holding the Christ Child in a peaceful, pastoral landscape. The saint is seated on a rock, enveloped in flowing drapery of violet and ochre hues, his gaze directed towards heaven, mirroring the Child’s gesture as he points to the celestial glory where cherub heads emerge from luminous clouds. The scene conveys a profound sense of paternal protection and divine revelation, expressed through a balanced and elegant composition. The painterly quality is evident in the refined rendering of the flesh tones, the delicacy of the Child’s face, and the rich colours of the drapery, rendered with soft gradations of light. The compositional techniques, the expressive tenderness of the figures, and the luminous atmosphere evoke the Neapolitan Baroque tradition of the late 17th century, closely resembling the style developed by Paolo de Matteis. The work stands out for the harmony of its design, the nobility of its figures, and the intense spirituality that emanates from the relationship between Saint Joseph and the Child.
