Description
FEATURED LOT - YOUNG PRINCE - Antonio Amorosi. Roman Italian School. 17th century
Oil on canvas. Dimensions 41 x 34 cm; framed 68 x 59 cm. The canvas depicts a child portrayed as the god Bacchus, presented in an elegant half-length portrait against a dark background. The figure holds a small cup whilst wearing rich fabrics adorned with jewels and a striking crown of red, white and black feathers that accentuates the theatrical nature of the depiction. The artist combines childlike spontaneity with the allegorical attributes characteristic of Bacchic iconography, creating an image of singular charm and courtly refinement. The delicacy of the flesh tones, the psychological vividness of the gaze, and the extraordinary rendering of textures reveal a hand of remarkable skill. The composition is firmly rooted in the late Roman Baroque tradition, in which the allegorical portrait of a child was widely popular in aristocratic circles. The attribution to Antonio Amorosi is consistent with the elegant sensibility, narrative grace and attention to detail that characterise his work. The work stands out for its expressive freshness and for the subtle fusion between portraiture and mythological allegory.
