Description
Important ‘Virgin and Child Crowned’, Signed, Hispanic American Colonial School, 18th century
Oil on wood. Measures 23 x 17 cm. A delicate devotional composition depicting the Virgin Mary holding the Child Jesus in a close and emotional embrace. Both figures are crowned, emphasising their regal and celestial status within Marian iconography. The Child gently rests his face against his mother’s whilst his arm encircles her neck, creating an image of profound tenderness and spiritual intimacy. The Virgin gazes at the viewer with a serene and meditative expression, reinforcing the contemplative nature of the work. The dark background draws attention to the sacred figures, whose faces and hands are highlighted by a carefully crafted gradation of light. The execution reveals a refined technique in the rendering of the flesh tones, the folds of the mantle, and the ornamental details of the golden crowns. The stylistic features reflect the tradition of Hispanic American religious painting from the colonial period, which drew on Spanish Baroque models disseminated throughout the American viceroyalties, where Marian devotion played a central role. The emotional intensity of the scene, combined with the compositional elegance and the intimate nature of the depiction, make this work a remarkable example of devotional painting intended for private use. Dimensions: 23 x 17 cm.
