Description
Saint Francis Receiving the Stigmata, from the circle of Bartolomé Esteban Murillo, 17th century Oil on canvas. Dimensions 160 x 106 cm. This devotional composition depicts Saint Francis of Assisi at the moment of receiving the stigmata, kneeling on a rocky outcrop and enveloped in an intense, supernatural light descending from above. The saint is dressed in the Franciscan habit with its flowing folds, his hands crossed over his chest, his gaze raised in profound mystical contemplation. At his feet lie the skull and the cross, symbols associated with meditation on death, penance and the imitation of Christ. The barely suggested landscape in the background emphasises the contemplative and spiritual nature of the composition, whilst the striking contrast of light draws attention to the saint’s ecstatic face. The style follows the models of 17th-century Spanish Baroque painting, characterised by intense naturalism, the use of strong chiaroscuro, and the pursuit of an emotional and intimate religious experience for the faithful. The work stands out for the expressive power of the figure, the chromatic restraint and the ability to convey the mystical fervour characteristic of Franciscan and Counter-Reformation spirituality.
