Saint Francis Receiving the Stigmata, from the circle of Bartolomé Esteban Murillo, 17th century Oil on canvas. Dimensions 160 x 106 cm. This devotional composition depicts Saint Francis of Assisi at the moment of receiving the stigmata, kneeling on a rocky outcrop and enveloped in an intense, supernatural light descending from above. The saint is dressed in the Franciscan habit with its flowing folds, his hands crossed over his chest, his gaze raised in profound mystical contemplation. At his feet lie the skull and the cross, symbols associated with meditation on death, penance and the imitation of Christ.
