Description
Saint Raymond Nonnatus. New Spain School. 18th century Oil on canvas. Dimensions 77 x 49 cm. An image of Saint Raymond Nonnatus in an ecstatic pose, raising his arms towards heavenly glory whilst two angels hover above him. In the foreground, the executioner carries out the punishment, alluding to one of the most significant episodes in the saint’s life and underscoring his status as a martyr for the faith. The vertical composition emphasises the upward movement of the scene and draws attention to the Mercedarian habit with its ample folds, rendered with remarkable fluidity. The soft lighting and the simplification of forms are common features of 18th-century New Spanish painting, where devotional intent took precedence over academic naturalism. The visual language combines narrative drama and contemplative spirituality, incorporating iconographic elements typical of the viceregal religious tradition. The work stands as a valuable testament to the sacred art produced in New Spain dedicated to the glorification of the saints of the Order of Mercy.
