Description
18th-century Mexican Colonial School – Saint Christopher Carrying the Child Jesus Oil on panel. Mexico, 18th century. Dimensions: 27 × 22 cm (unframed); 33 × 28 cm (framed). An interesting depiction of Saint Christopher carrying the Christ Child on his shoulders across a river, one of the most widespread episodes in Christian iconography. The saint is depicted as a man of great physical strength, leaning on a sturdy staff, his gaze fixed on the Child, who blesses with his right hand and holds the orb in his left as a symbol of his dominion over the world. The composition follows models widely used in 18th-century New Spanish painting, characterised by the dynamism of the figures, rich colour, and devotional intensity. The delicately rendered background landscape helps to contextualise the legendary episode in which the saint bears the weight of Christ and, symbolically, that of all humanity. The work retains the popular and deeply religious character typical of Mexican colonial painting intended for both churches and domestic oratories.
