Description
ANIELLO ASCIONE (Naples, 1600 – Naples, 1656) - Still Life with Flowers and Fruit
Oil on canvas. Dimensions: 115 x 162 cm. Aniello Ascione was one of the most prominent still-life painters of the Neapolitan Baroque school, working in a city that, during the 17th century, became one of the main European centres for this genre. A pupil of Giovanni Battista Ruoppolo and praised by the historian Bernardo De Dominici for his skill in depicting flowers and fruit with extraordinary chromatic richness and naturalism, Ascione established himself as one of the leading figures in Neapolitan still-life painting. This composition is a magnificent example of his work, displaying on a table an exuberant array of flowers, fruits and insects arranged with great theatrical flair against a deep, dark background. The painting features large vases and baskets overflowing with roses, carnations, tulips and other varieties of flowers, combined with split pomegranates, grapes, pears, peaches, quinces and other fruits, rendered with remarkable botanical precision. The carefully directed lighting emphasises the volumes and textures, highlighting the smoothness of the fruit, the delicacy of the petals, and the reflections on the leaves, whilst the insects and butterflies introduce a refined naturalistic element inherited from the Flemish tradition, whose influence was particularly strong in 17th-century Naples. The composition combines the Baroque taste for abundance and decorative effect with a subtle symbolic content relating to the fleeting nature of life, the ephemeral beauty of nature, and the passage of time. The attribution to Aniello Ascione is supported by the quality of the execution, the scenographic construction of the composition, and the close stylistic similarities it shares with other recognised still lifes by the artist, particularly in the treatment of the floral arrangements, the richness of colour, and the meticulous observation of each element depicted.
