Description
ANTONIO AMOROSI (Comunanza, 1660 – Rome, 1738) Attributed – Portrait of a young man wearing a hat Oil on paper mounted on canvas. Dimensions: 32 x 23 cm. Antonio Amorosi was one of the most distinctive painters of the Roman school of the late 17th and early 18th centuries, renowned for his genre scenes featuring young peasants, beggars, musicians and other ordinary people, all depicted with great naturalism and psychological sensitivity. This work depicts a young man wearing a hat in a half-length portrait of marked immediacy and an intimate character. Its attribution to the master is based on several stylistic features characteristic of his work, particularly the spontaneous rendering of the model, the direct treatment of the face, and the use of soft lighting that models the features without excessive dramatic contrasts. The figure’s serene expression, the attention paid to the details of the clothing, and the compositional simplicity allude to the tradition of Roman genre painting developed by Amorosi, who combined the naturalistic observation of everyday reality with remarkable pictorial elegance. The delicate rendering of the flesh tones, the restrained colour palette, and the intimate atmosphere of the scene find parallels in numerous portraits and figure studies attributed to the artist, characterised by his interest in depicting humble figures treated with dignity and humanity. The work retains the charm and freshness typical of these small-scale works intended for private collections, where the psychological connection with the model takes centre stage. It shows some imperfections and wear consistent with the nature of the support. The wooden frame is a later addition and is not contemporary with the painting.
