Description
PIETRO NOVELLI (Monreale, 1603 – Palermo, 1647) - Saint Peter
Oil on canvas. Dimensions: 52 x 42 cm. Pietro Novelli, known as Il Monrealese, was the most important figure in 17th-century Sicilian painting and one of the artists who best fused the naturalist tradition derived from Caravaggio with the classicist influences arriving from Rome and Bologna. This work depicts Saint Peter in a half-bust composition, showing the apostle in his later years holding the keys to the Kingdom of Heaven, his most characteristic iconographic attribute. The saint is portrayed with profound psychological intensity, through an image of great sobriety and spiritual strength that focuses all attention on the expression on his face. The directional lighting highlights the apostle’s broad forehead, greying beard and hands, creating a powerful contrast with the dark background and reinforcing the effect of introspection. The composition fully reflects the Sicilian naturalist tradition developed by Novelli during his mature period, characterised by monumental figures, a warm palette dominated by earth tones and ochres, and a special ability to convey humanity and emotion in sacred figures. The facial features, the rendering of the flesh tones, and the modelling of the drapery find parallels in various depictions of apostles and saints by the Sicilian master and his circle. The presence of the keys unequivocally identifies the figure as Saint Peter, the first pope of the Church and one of the most frequently depicted subjects in Baroque devotional painting. The work stands out for the nobility of the image, the expressive intensity of the face, and the quality of the execution—characteristics that explain the prominence achieved by Pietro Novelli within the Italian artistic landscape of the 17th century.
