Description
15th-century Hispano-Flemish Master – Saint Peter Oil on panel. Dimensions: 97 x 50 cm. This panel depicts Saint Peter in full-length, identified by the keys to the Kingdom of Heaven which he holds in his hands, an attribute symbolising his status as the first pontiff of the Church. The figure is clad in a wide red cloak over a green tunic and stands out against an open, Flemish-inspired landscape, characterised by gentle hills, distant architecture and vegetation that lends spatial depth to the composition. The work is firmly rooted in the Hispano-Flemish tradition that developed in the territories of the Crown of Aragon during the second half of the 15th century, a period when Flemish influences were integrated with local Gothic models. The apostle’s face is characterised by a highly individualised expression, whilst the treatment of the drapery reveals an interest in the volume and monumentality of the figures. The golden halo, created using gold leaf, still evokes late Gothic traditions, whilst the growing attention to natural space and the modelling effects already foreshadow the new Renaissance trends. Owing to its stylistic characteristics—particularly in the conception of the figure, facial features, treatment of the landscape and the rendering of drapery folds—the work shows affinities with the output of Miguel Ximénez (documented between 1462 and 1524), one of the leading figures in Aragonese painting at the end of the 15th century. Parallels can also be drawn with some of the surviving panels of saints from his artistic circle, where a similar combination of the Hispano-Flemish tradition and an openness to new naturalistic models can be observed. Whilst a definitive attribution cannot be proposed, the comparison with the work of Miguel Ximénez is particularly relevant for situating this painting within the Aragonese artistic landscape of the late 15th and early 16th centuries.
