Oil on poplar panel. Dimensions: 62 x 37.5 cm. Marco d’Oggiono was one of Leonardo da Vinci’s most outstanding pupils and one of the most important figures of Lombard Leonardism at the end of the 15th and beginning of the 16th centuries. Trained within the master’s Milanese circle, he developed a style deeply influenced by Leonardo’s innovations, particularly in the rendering of facial expressions, the modelling of flesh tones, and the creation of immersive atmospheres. This work depicts the infant Saint John the Baptist in a wooded landscape, holding the traditional reed cross and pointing to it with his hand, whilst resting one foot on a sphere. The figure appears remarkably monumental despite his youth, with notable features including the softness of the light transitions, the delicate anatomical modelling, and the intense psychological weight of his gaze—elements closely linked to the Leonardesque tradition. The attribution to Marco d’Oggiono is supported by numerous stylistic characteristics present in the work, particularly the typology of the child’s face, the large pupils with their melancholic expression, the rendering of the flesh tones with soft glazes, and the volumetric construction of the figure. Particularly significant are the similarities with various Marian compositions and depictions of children by the artist, including the Madonna and Child in the Pinacoteca Ambrosiana in Milan, where a very similar physiognomy can be seen in the children’s faces, as well as a similar pursuit of expressive sweetness and naturalism. The composition is fully in keeping with the artistic climate fostered by Leonardo in Milan, characterised by the use of sfumato, the harmonious integration of figure and landscape, and the creation of a poetic atmosphere of great subtlety.
