Description
18TH-CENTURY FLEMISH SCHOOL, AFTER ADRIAEN VAN OSTADE (Haarlem, 1610 – Haarlem, 1685) – Pair of tavern or fair scenes Oil on canvas. Dimensions: 39 x 28 cm each. This pair of paintings depicts various scenes of peasant revelry inspired by the pictorial tradition developed by Adriaen van Ostade, one of the most celebrated Dutch masters of the 17th century, who specialised in genre scenes. The compositions show groups of figures gathered in rural settings, taking part in popular celebrations, conversations and anecdotal situations rendered with a strong narrative sense. The portrayal of the peasants is imbued with a humorous and caricatured tone, a characteristic feature of painting inspired by Van Ostade, who was able to reflect with great humanity the customs, amusements and weaknesses of daily life. The scenes are notable for the expressiveness of the faces, the variety of the figures’ gestures and postures, and the meticulous recreation of the interiors and everyday settings. The artist employs a warm colour palette dominated by earth tones and an enveloping light that helps to reinforce the intimate and festive character of the compositions. These types of paintings enjoyed enormous popularity amongst European collectors during the 17th and 18th centuries, becoming one of the most representative genres of Flemish and Dutch painting. Created during the 18th century following models and compositions inspired by the work of Adriaen van Ostade, these paintings are a fine example of the continuity and spread of the taste for Flemish genre scenes, combining an observation of daily life, a sense of humour, and pictorial refinement. The fact that they form a pair enhances their decorative appeal and collectability, fully preserving the spirit of the popular celebrations that made the Haarlem master’s work famous.
