Description
18TH CENTURY FLEMISH SCHOOL - Ice-skating scene on a lake Oil on panel. Dimensions: 14.5 x 20.5 cm. Dimensions with frame: 31.5 x 37.5 cm. This work depicts a lively winter scene centred around a village church, where numerous figures enjoy seasonal activities on a vast expanse of ice. Skaters, walkers and small groups of figures are scattered throughout the foreground and central area of the composition, whilst the silhouette of the church rises as the dominant element of the landscape, creating an image characteristic of the Flemish and Dutch pictorial tradition inspired by daily life during the coldest months of the year. Skating scenes were among the most popular subjects in Northern European painting from the late 16th century onwards, achieving extraordinary popularity thanks to masters such as Hendrick Avercamp, Anthonie Verstraelen and Gijsbrecht Leytens. These compositions allowed artists to combine landscape, architecture and genre scenes in a single work, offering an idealised yet documentary view of popular customs. This painting is notable for the meticulous execution of the small figures, the delicacy of the atmospheric effects, and the balance between human activity and the architectural environment. The colour palette, dominated by greys, whites and soft blue tones, helps to recreate the characteristic luminosity of winter landscapes in Northern Europe. The presence of the church as the focal point of the composition also provides an element of stability and a sense of community, underscoring the central role these buildings played in the lives of Flemish communities. Painted on panel and in a good state of preservation, the work is a fine example of 18th-century Flemish winter painting, continuing an iconographic tradition that remained highly popular amongst collectors and enthusiasts for generations.
