Description
RICHARD BRAKENBURGH SCHOOL (Haarlem, 1650 – Haarlem, 1702) - Interior of an inn with peasants
Oil on relined canvas. Dimensions: 46 x 55 cm. Dimensions with frame: 62 x 71 cm. This work depicts a lively interior scene set in a rural inn, where various peasants gather around a table, chatting and enjoying their leisure time. The composition belongs to the tradition of Dutch genre painting that developed during the Dutch Golden Age, characterised by the depiction of everyday scenes featuring ordinary people in domestic and tavern settings. The scene is notable for the naturalness of the poses, the expressiveness of the faces, and the careful recreation of the interior environment, where furniture, utensils and architectural elements combine to create a warm and realistic atmosphere. The work shows clear affinities with the work of Richard Brakenburgh, one of the principal continuators of the tradition established by Adriaen van Ostade and Jan Steen. Active in Haarlem during the second half of the 17th century, Brakenburgh specialised in small- and medium-sized genre scenes, characterised by their narrative interest, humorous tone and meticulous observation of everyday life. The soft lighting, balanced arrangement of figures, and attention to detail in clothing and objects are reflected in numerous compositions by the artist, in which everyday life is portrayed with intimacy and sensitivity. Relined and in good condition, the painting is an attractive example of the Dutch genre tradition and the popularity of peasant interiors amongst European collectors in the 17th and 18th centuries. Lot held in an international warehouse (within the EU). Intra-EU shipping: no import duties apply within the EU. An export licence from the country of origin may be required.
