Description
DUTCH SCHOOL, ATTRIBUTED TO ADRIAEN VAN OSTADE (Haarlem, 1610 – Haarlem, 1685) - The Drinker and the Smoker
Oil on canvas. Dimensions: 24 x 30 cm. Dimensions with frame: 41 x 47.5 cm. This work depicts a tavern scene featuring a drinker and a smoker gathered inside a modest inn, a theme of fundamental importance in 17th-century Dutch genre painting. The figures are portrayed with great naturalness in a moment of everyday leisure, sharing drink and tobacco in an intimate and down-to-earth atmosphere created through warm lighting and a careful arrangement of the interior elements. The expressiveness of the faces, the spontaneity of the gestures, and the attention paid to the small details of the scene reveal the interest in observing daily life that characterised the great Dutch masters of the Golden Age. The work shows clear affinities with the work of Adriaen van Ostade, one of the most prominent representatives of the Haarlem school, famous for its depictions of peasants, taverns and working-class interiors. Influenced by Adriaen Brouwer, Van Ostade developed a personal style characterised by the humanity of his characters, the psychological depth of his scenes, and a masterful use of light to create vibrant and authentic atmospheres. This painting displays numerous features associated with his style, particularly in the characterisation of the figures, the rendering of the atmosphere, and the balance between realism and anecdotal detail. These types of compositions enjoyed extraordinary popularity amongst European collectors in the 17th and 18th centuries, becoming one of the most highly regarded genres of Dutch painting and providing valuable insight into the customs and social life of the period. Lot held in an international warehouse (within the EU). Intra-EU shipping: no import duties apply within the EU. An export licence from the country of origin may be required.
