Description
18TH-CENTURY FLEMISH SCHOOL, PROBABLY FROM THE WORKSHOP OF ADRIAEN VAN DER WERFF (Kralingen, 1659 – Rotterdam, 1722) – The Sleeping Bacchante
Oil on canvas mounted on panel. Dimensions: 28.5 x 40 cm. This work depicts a sleeping Bacchante, a mythologically inspired subject that achieved considerable popularity in classical painting during the 17th and 18th centuries. The female figure is shown in a reposeful pose, rendered with a formal delicacy and compositional elegance characteristic of the Flemish and Dutch academic school influenced by the work of Adriaen van der Werff. Regarded as one of the most refined painters of his time, Van der Werff achieved extraordinary international renown thanks to his mythological, religious and allegorical compositions, characterised by the perfection of the drawing, the softness of the flesh tones and an extremely polished technique. This painting shares this artistic language, demonstrating careful attention to anatomy, a refined treatment of light, and an idealised atmosphere reminiscent of the models developed by the master and his circle. The artwork is set in an exceptional carved and gilded oak frame decorated with heart-shaped motifs and pearl friezes, stamped by Étienne Louis Infroit (1720–1774), master sculptor of the Academy of Saint-Luc and master cabinetmaker, one of the leading figures in 18th-century French ornamentation. Created during the Louis XVI period, this frame is a work of great artistic interest in its own right, combining Neoclassical elegance with outstanding carving and gilding. External dimensions of the frame: 50 x 44.5 cm. Internal dimensions: 37 x 28 cm. The frame is offered separately from the painting. Lot held in an international warehouse (within the EU). Intra-EU shipping: no import duties apply within the EU. An export licence from the country of origin may be required.
