BERNARDO STROZZI (Genoa, 1581 – Venice, 1644) - Portrait of a Man with a White Collar
Oil on canvas. Dimensions: 64 x 46 cm. Dimensions with frame: 76.5 x 59.5 x 6.5 cm. We are grateful to Dr Anna Orlando for her assistance in cataloguing this work, whose attribution to Bernardo Strozzi has been confirmed by the specialist. A copy of her expert report is attached. This work is a bust portrait of a young gentleman, turned slightly to the right, set against a neutral background that draws all attention to the psychological intensity of the sitter. The delicate depiction of the broad white neck, the elegant beard, the quality of the flesh tones, and the masterful treatment of light are all elements entirely consistent with the portraiture of Bernardo Strozzi, one of the most prominent figures of the Italian Baroque. Known as ‘Il Cappuccino’ and ‘Il Prete Genovese’, Strozzi developed a pictorial language characterised by a synthesis of Caravaggio’s naturalism and the chromatic richness of the Venetian school, becoming one of the most sought-after portrait painters in Genoa and later Venice. Throughout his career, he painted portraits of aristocrats, clergymen and other prominent figures of his time, distinguished by his extraordinary ability to capture the physical presence and personality of his subjects. In her report, Anna Orlando provides seven important comparative examples that firmly place this painting within the Genoese master’s oeuvre, revealing parallels in the construction of the face, the treatment of light, and the understated elegance of the composition. The fluid brushwork, atmospheric quality and psychological depth of the sitter are recurring features in Strozzi’s finest portraits and demonstrate the high quality of this work.
