Description
Allegory of Autumn – “Bernardo Monsú”. Danish School active in Italy. 17th century Oil on canvas. Dimensions 96 x 77 cm. A half-length composition centred on the figure of an old man pouring wine from a glass bottle into a goblet, captured in a moment of contemplation and concentration that emphasises the sensory experience associated with taste. The scene unfolds against a dark background that isolates the figure and draws all attention to the deliberate movement of his hands, the flow of the liquid, and the meditative expression on his face. The clothing, rendered with ample folds and a richly textured fur coat, adds tactile variety and reinforces the naturalism of the image. The iconography is linked to seasonal allegories and the celebration of the senses, associating wine with autumnal abundance and a moral reflection on the enjoyment of earthly pleasures. The focused lighting precisely highlights the anatomy of the face and hands, creating intense contrasts of light that reveal the artist’s training in the Dutch tradition and his mastery of chiaroscuro. The technical quality is evident in the psychological realism of the figure, the meticulous rendering of surfaces, and the subtlety of the chromatic gradations. The work is firmly rooted in the genre painting style developed by Eberhard Keil during his Italian period, in which he fused direct observation of everyday reality with allegorical content of a symbolic nature. Its visual language connects with the naturalistic sensibility disseminated by the Bamboccianti and with the collector’s taste for popular scenes imbued with moral significance. This painting is a remarkable example of Bernardo Monsú’s artistic maturity and his ability to transform an everyday subject into an image of profound sensory and narrative resonance.
