Description
Still Life with Flowers, in the style of Antonio Tibaldi. 18th century
Oil on relined canvas. Dimensions 84 x 108 cm. A sumptuous still life comprising a refined arrangement of peaches, bunches of grapes and an exuberant floral display on tables covered with rich textiles embroidered with intricate plant motifs and finished with elegant gold fringe. All of this is framed by a wide curtain in shades of blue, which lends depth and a sense of drama to the scene. The composition is organised through a carefully considered balance of masses, colours and diagonals that guide the eye amongst the various still lifes, creating an effect of carefully ordered abundance. The extraordinary attention paid to the textures of the materials allows one to appreciate the velvety smoothness of the fruit, the delicacy of the petals, and the ornamental richness of the fabrics, all rendered with remarkable technical virtuosity. The soft, directional lighting defines the volumes and creates subtle contrasts of light that accentuate the sense of spatial depth, in keeping with the aesthetic principles of Roman Baroque. The work belongs to the tradition of aristocratic still lifes developed in Rome during the 17th and 18th centuries, closely linked to the collecting tastes of the great patrician families, for whom this genre represented a manifestation of wealth, cultural refinement and social prestige. The pictorial language reveals the influence of Antonio Tibaldi, characterised by the controlled accumulation of sumptuous objects and the creation of visually dense yet harmonious settings. Beneath the apparent celebration of abundance lies a possible reflection on the fleeting nature of earthly pleasures, evoked by the perishable nature of flowers and fruit, thus incorporating a subtle symbolic discourse on time, luxury and the transience of existence. 84 x 108 cm.
