Description
Important – Italian portrait, Genoese painter – 17th century Oil on relined canvas. Dimensions 44 x 37 cm; frame 59 x 49 cm. A half-bust portrait of a mature gentleman emerging from a dark background, his face turned slightly towards the viewer, his expression lively and introspective, conveying all the psychological intensity of the composition. The figure is dressed in understated, dark-coloured clothing, enlivened only by the white of his collar – a detail that draws attention to his features, particularly his thick hair, long grey beard and rosy cheeks, rendered with delicate gradations of light. The light falls directly on his face, creating a refined interplay of light and shadow that lends volume, depth and a remarkable physical presence to the subject. The fluid and confident brushwork effectively depicts the textures of the hair, skin and beard, revealing a spontaneous and expressive execution characteristic of the Italian Baroque sensibility. The work belongs to the portrait tradition of the 17th-century Genoese school, characterised by the assimilation of naturalist and Caravaggesque influences alongside a particular focus on the sitter’s psychological individuality. The compositional restraint, the concentration of light, and the expressive intensity of the face reflect an interest in capturing the sitter’s humanity beyond any social ostentation, placing the painting within one of the most refined and cosmopolitan movements of the Italian Baroque. Dimensions: 44 x 37 cm.
