Description
Important portrait of a woman – In the style of Thomas Hudson, English School, 18th century
Oil on relined canvas. Dimensions 127 x 101 cm; frame 143 x 118 cm. An elegant formal portrait of a lady of the English aristocracy seated in an armchair, her figure slightly turned and her gaze directed at the viewer, conveying a balanced combination of distinction, serenity and refinement. The subject wears a sumptuous red velvet gown embellished with white lace, pearls and jewels adorning the neckline and collar, whilst a flowing mantle with silvery sheen falls with studied naturalness over her shoulders. The composition unfolds against a dark background that draws all attention to the figure and enhances the luminosity of her skin, the chromatic richness of the fabrics, and the gleam of the ornaments. The masterful rendering of the fabrics is particularly noteworthy; their ample, satiny folds create a sophisticated interplay of light and shadow, revealing a remarkable sensitivity in the depiction of material qualities. The face is rendered with soft tonal gradations that lend it delicacy and idealised elegance, whilst the controlled pose and the arrangement of the hands evoke the portrait styles developed by Anthony van Dyck and later adopted by 18th-century British portraiture. The work belongs to the artistic circle of Thomas Hudson, one of the leading English portrait painters of his time, whose work was characterised by combining the depiction of social prestige with refined psychological observation. The result is an image of great visual nobility that reflects the ideals of elegance, virtue and distinction characteristic of Georgian British society. Dimensions: 127 x 101 cm.
