Description
Saint Anthony of Padua with the Child, Flemish school, 17th century Oil on canvas. Dimensions: 146 x 123 cm; 167 x 114 cm. A devotional scene centred on Saint Anthony of Padua kneeling before the Christ Child, who rests on a book and is accompanied by a delicate lily in the foreground, a symbol of purity. The composition combines the intimacy of the sacred encounter with a serene landscape background, whilst the light softly highlights the saint’s habit and the luminous flesh of the child. The treatment of volumes, the restrained gravity of the face, and the overall nobility are reminiscent of Baroque styles of Flemish origin, closely associated with the circle of Erasmus Quellinus.
