Description
Immaculate Conception, Hispanic American School, late 17th – early 18th century
Oil on canvas. Dimensions: 65 x 53 cm. Depicts the Immaculate Conception standing on the moon, her hands clasped in prayer and surrounded by a retinue of cherubs amidst the clouds, in keeping with the Baroque Marian iconographic tradition. The figure’s frontal positioning, the blue-green mantle, the light-coloured tunic, and the presence of cherubs bearing symbolic attributes reinforce the composition’s triumphant and celestial character. The surface shows signs of wear and restoration, but retains a powerful devotional impact and an aesthetic rooted in a distinct colonial tradition, in which spirituality takes precedence over naturalism.
