River landscape with bridge and tower, Italian School, 18th century Oil on canvas. Dimensions 111 x 95 / 139 x 119 cm. An idealised landscape centred on a single-arched bridge topped by a cylindrical tower, with a waterfall in the foreground, figures of travellers above, and fishermen or figures by the water below. The composition combines broad swathes of shadow with a luminous patch of clear sky that creates a sense of depth and draws the eye towards the distant horizon. The depiction of the water, the rock formations and the trees bent by the wind accentuates the poetic and theatrical character of the whole.
