Description
Virgin of the Immaculate Conception, Hispanic or Colonial School, 18th century
Oil on canvas. Dimensions: 84 x 64 cm; 99 x 77 cm including frame. The work depicts the Immaculate Conception rising above the celestial sphere and the serpent, her hands clasped in prayer and her face turned in a gentle expression of humility and contemplation. The Marian figure wears a light tunic and a blue mantle with ample folds, surrounded by a golden atmosphere of supernatural radiance in which cherubs and angelic heads float. One of the angels holds symbolic attributes linked to Mary’s purity, reinforcing the doctrinal and iconographic dimension of the subject, whilst the barely suggested landscape at the bottom serves as the earthly setting for the glorious apparition. The composition, with its ascending verticality, draws the eye to the Virgin’s elegant silhouette and the contrast between the enveloping light and the blue accents of the mantle. The execution reveals a devotional style with a distinctly late Baroque character, characterised by pious intent, a gentle simplification of features, and luminous colouring aimed at spiritual exaltation. Owing to its iconography, its gentle treatment and its sense of celestial vision, the work fits within the Hispanic or colonial tradition of religious painting, particularly linked to the deep-rooted devotion to the Immaculate Conception. Its significance lies in the symbolic clarity of its message, the delicacy of the Marian figure, and its ability to inspire contemplation and fervour.
